Proper masking can significantly reduce the very real risks associated with wildfire smoke inhalation. The stakes are high—so let’s answer some frequently asked questions about the best use of respirators and how to stay properly protected. 

What type of mask will protect me from wildfire smoke?

Your best defense against wildfire smoke inhalation is an N95 respirator, according to health experts. These disposable masks are designed to filter out at least 95% of airborne particles, including dangerous smoke particles. (Keep in mind: N95 respirators do not filter toxic gases or vapors, or the smell of smoke.) 

N95 respirators are available with or without an exhalation valve. If you’re somewhere where you want to protect others from your exhaled air, such as public transit or other crowded areas, opt for a model without a valve. If you expect to wear your respirator for hours at a time, an exhalation valve can help you stay cool and comfortable.

How can I be certain that my mask is reliable and effective?

Be sure to check that your disposable mask is approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). N95 respirators approved by NIOSH undergo rigorous testing to ensure their filtration efficiency and reliability. Check for the NIOSH label and approval number on the mask or its packaging. 

How do I know if I’m wearing my mask correctly? 

Proper protection requires a proper fit. For your N95 respirator to work effectively, be sure to follow these fit guidelines from the CDC: 

• Inspect the mask for damage—if your N95 appears damaged, do not use it.
• Hold the N95 in your palm with the nose piece facing your fingertips. (If you don’t have a nose piece, use the printed text to ensure the top end is facing up).
• Place the mask under your chin and pull the top strap over your head, near the crown. Then pull the bottom strap over and place it at the back of your neck, below your ears. Make sure the straps lay flat and aren’t twisted or crisscrossed.
• With your fingertips, press down on both sides of the nose piece at the top to mold it to your face.
• Perform a fit check by holding up your hand, exhaling and feeling for leaks. Adjust as necessary. (Glasses-wearers: If they start to fog, your mask is not snug.)
• Replace your N95 when the straps are stretched out, if it gets wet or damaged, or when it no longer fits snug on your face. And throw it away—don’t try to wash or sterilize your disposable mask.
